Red shirts vow to bring a million to Bangkok
Leaders of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship yesterday repeated their vow to amass a million red-shirted demonstrators to oust the government, which they accused of trying to portray the pro-Thaksin Shinawatra movement in a bad light to the public.
Jatuporn Promphan told a press conference at the People Channel TV station in Lat Phrao that the red shirts had been instructed to walk or push their way through all road checkpoints on their way to Bangkok.
The soldiers and police manning the checkpoints would be violating the law if they only stopped red-shirted protesters coming to the capital to demonstrate their constitutional rights against the government, regardless of whether violence was employed, he said.
The red shirts did not attempt to blow up gas tankers and use violence against Bangkok residents during the April mayhem last year, he said.
"The government is using this as propaganda to turn Bangkok residents against the red-shirt rally," he said.
Thai military to be ready during rally
BANGKOK, March 10 (UPI) -- Thai military officials say the tough Internal Security Act will be enough to maintain order during a weekend rally by supporters of a former prime minister.
The rally in Bangkok and other places could attract hundreds of thousands and is organized mainly by supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire who now lives in exile after being ousted in a 2006 military coup.
Thai Army Chief Anupong Paojinda said he is confident the ISA, which the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva agreed to invoke, will be enough to deal with the rally without using emergency powers, the Bangkok Post reported Wednesday. The act transfers law and order responsibilities from police to the armed forces.
The internal security law will be in force until March 23, covering all of Bangkok and other districts where rallies are planned.
Organizers of the "red shirt" rally led by United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, or UDD, have said they plan to continue their demonstration until new elections are called by the current 14-month old government.
Last month, the Thai Supreme Court found Thaksin guilty of abuse of power and concealing his wealth while he was in power, and ordered the seizure of $1.4 billion, or 60 percent of his assets, which have been frozen since the 2006 coup. Thaksin, who has denied the charges, already has been sentenced to two years in prison for corruption.

Reds burn spirit house after verdic
Red-shirt protesters on Friday night burned a spirit house - or saan jao - after the Supreme Court ruled that 46.37 billion baht out of 76.6 billion baht of frozen assets of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his family should be seized by the state.
Reports said supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship's splinter group, Daeng Siam (Red Siam), who staged a rally at Sanam Luang near the Supreme Court buildings, set fire to a joss house after the verdict was delivered.
